My Bedroom Room Reveal!

The long and awaited bedroom reveal is finally here!

I am so excited to share with you guys a special project that I am so proud of. Moving back home with my mom was never something that I dreaded. In fact, it got me really excited. My mom and I are BFFs so it was a total bonus that moving back gave me both Taft and her. So when I decided to make the move from Newport Beach back to Nashville - so Taft and i can live in the same place - I knew that I had a new project on my hands. Let me explain.

My mom’s basement was something that was not at the top of the list for renovations at her house at all. It was kind of always the teenager den where our friends would gather and watch late night movies, play pool, and get into all kinds of trouble. It’s where my brother would post up all weekend to play Fortnite with endless empty chip bags and soda cans covering the coffee table. It’s also the place that just somehow collected all of the junk in the house with no organization and order. In the basement also included what we call our guestroom. This is where gas can stay that feels a little bit separate from the house but its own en suite with double sinks and it separate entrance into the bedroom. The perfect spot for someone like me moving back home needed a little extra space. ;)

About the Space

When each of us four kids started their senior year in high school we were allowed to move into the basement and have a little bit of space to ourselves. My mom tried her best with the little money she had to make it something fun and special for whoever is moving into the room. Growing up we always shared a room with either her sister or her brother until one of them moved out so having something that was all yours was always something I for sure look forward to. But since I was living in there my senior , a lot has changed. My younger sister moved out and went off to college which left just my little brother there with my mom in the house that I grew up in.

Challenges

1. The space has its fair share of challenges. One of which are the bay windows that wrap around the entire side of the room. We have never hung any kind of curtains in the bay window because it is simply just too hard to find a curtain rod that has six sides and the size that we need and in the color and finish that we want it. I knew I wanted to turn that challenge into something beautiful and figure out a way to do window treatments in this part of the room.

2. The color of the walls have never changed since my mom and dad bought the house 20 years ago. It is the typical contractor track home dark beige that for whatever reason was in style in the 90s. I knew I wanted to freshen up and throw some white on the walls.

3. With it being the basement we have had our fair share of water damage, but when a really bad couple of days of rain started seeping in to the basement We knew it was going to be an issue. The plan was always to rip out all the carpet and replace it with hardwood floors, but it was never in the budget. I knew that by moving back home I would have a little extra money Since I wasn’t paying rent and could afford to lay down some hard flooring throughout the bedroom for my mom.

Before:

Flooring

One of the first big projects was to get the flooring done. I worked with Ethan Paine from Limestone Construction to install this beautiful hardwood floor. It was the perfect timeless floor to set the stage for the space - and Ethan did an amazing job with the installation!

Bed

I knew I needed the perfect bed for this space! So of course I turned to Jonathan Louis. What I love about the beds from this brand is that the fabric is customizable - and there are hundreds of fabrics to choose from! I went with the Dharma Bed in Sugarshack Crème. The color was perfect for my design, and I also loved that the fabric is easy-to-clean because it is part of JL’s curated collection of performance fabrics, called “Just Live.” The bed has storage drawers underneath, which are perfect for stowing linens. I got quite a few pieces for this room from Jonathan Louis - make sure to check out for stores near you if you’re looking to redesign!

Chairs and Ottoman

For chairs, I went with the Addison Chairs from Jonathan Louis. These chairs are great because they can be customized in your fabric of choice, with hundreds to choose from! There’s a huge variety with a ton of super fun patterns and textures - I love that it’s totally customizable! I went with the Natural Sheepskin. It was a super soft, inviting faux fur that I knew would be great for the space. I also love the beautiful frame with a blackened brass metal finish.

When I was adding in the accent chairs, I knew I would also want an ottoman. I can totally picture sitting down and reading in this little corner - it’s so cozy! I went with the Cosmo Pouf from Moss Studio - I loved the texture of the wrapped fabric and the clear base tied into other elements I chose for the space.

Rug

I knew I wanted a fun, patterned or colored rug for this space. It adds a twist and touch of whimsy to the overall clean design. When I had an idea of what I wanted in my mind, I went immediately to Annie Selke to pick one out. Their stuff is all about high-quality pieces with color and approachable elegance - so I knew they would have what I wanted! They’re also a small business and focus on responsibly crafted products - which is a big extra win in my book! For this room, I went with the 8x10 Hugo Hand Knotted Rug.

Accent Pillows

Pillows are one of my favorite accents to make a room feel comfy and inviting - a feel I definitely wanted for this bedroom! I got all the pillows for this space at Little Design Company. For the pillows on the chairs, I went with the Panel Signature Velvet Noir pillows, which is a linen pillow with a velvet panel in the center. I loved the mix of textures. For the bed, I added a fun bolster pillow - the Graffito // Onyx + Beige. I also grabbed The Little Lumbar :: Signature Velvet // Nutmeg + Alabaster pillow for the chair, which really tied them all together!

Mattress

Having an awesome mattress is one of the most important parts of any bedroom! I went with a Lux Estate Cassatt mattress from Stearns and Foster. I love the HD Memory Foam in this bed - it is SO comfortable, while also being super supportive! It literally feels like sleeping on a cloud. And there’s a lot of options to make sure you get the right mattress for you - you can choose between firm, plush, and ultra firm.

Bedding

For the bedding, I knew I wanted to stick to the overall clean feel of the room, with some fun accents. I turned to Brooklinen, because I knew they’d have the look I wanted and because all of their bedding is beautiful, high-quality and ridiculously comfortable. For the quilt, I chose the Linen Quilt in white and king-size and the matching Linen Quilted Shams, also in king-size and white. I also added the Luxury Hardcore Sheet Bundle in white and the king-size All Season Down Comforter. Finally I grabbed four of the king-size Down Alternative Pillows and added some accent pillows.

Table Lamps

For table lamps, I went with these beautiful Brentwood Table Lamps from Couture Lamps - I am obsessed! I love the mix of marble and gold - so elegant! And the white from the shade tied together really nicely with the rest of the space.

Art

Art can sometimes be one of the hardest things to pick out for a space! You want the right balance of interest, without overtaking the rest of your design. I grabbed some great pieces from Josh Young Design and Hayley Mitchell for this room - they have the best stuff! I also used Voila Creative Studio for framing.

Accent Chair

I’ve been obsessed with cane furniture lately - as those who have been following me for a while know! So I knew I had to incorporate it into this space! I went with this Mid Century Jeanneret Armchair from France & Son. I chose to add an accent pillow and a throw to it, but it’s such a classic and versatile piece that you could transform it for any space with different design touches!

Paint

For paint, I went with a classic Sherwin Williams color - the Emerald Interior,  Alabaster SW-7008 in a satin finish. I wanted a clean color that really let the pieces in this room shine - and this was the perfect one! This color is the best pure white, that i use in almost all of my own design projects . It has a warmer undertone, but doesn’t sway too creamy, which is what we wanted. The paint had amazing coverage over the existing brown that we had before and hardly needed a second coat!

Lighting

I’m all about a beautiful chandelier for a bedroom - it adds so much class and luxury! I picked out this Brasher chandelier from Hudson Valley Lighting - it’s amazing! It’s so unique and elegant! I also added the Ekena Millwork CM20VI Ceiling Medallion, which I got on Amazon for a steal!

Curtains

For curtains, I went with a classic white. With so many interesting pieces in the space, I wanted the curtains to be clean and classic, to let everything else shine. These RITVA curtains from Ikea are great because they are affordable and still let in some light to keep the space bright, but not too much.
